Book Review: Powerless by Lauren Roberts

Title: Powerless
Author: Lauren Roberts
Series/Standalone: The Powerless Trilogy (Book #1)
Genre: Romantasy, Young Adult, Fantasy
Pages: 526
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Year Published: 2023
Format: Audiobook

"She is the very thing he's spent his whole life hunting.
He's the very thing she's spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya- the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.

The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that- ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime- making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.

When Paedyn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites' powers- the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is- completely Ordinary."

My Rating: 4.75/5

If we were rating things purely on enjoyment, I would have rated this a five, but there were a few things that threw it off for me. I did listen to the adapted audiobook that included the sound effects (also the first time I listened to one of these). I loved it; the character actors were great, and the content was fun and entertaining. There was a lot of repetition of the character's motivation, to the point that I was annoyed. It felt like sometimes the author didn't believe we were smart enough to remember the characters' feelings and motivations. I will be continuing the series because it is the perfect trope-filled romantasy for this time of year.

Book Review: Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

Title: Every Summer After
Author: Carley Fortune
Series/Standalone: Barry's Bay (Book #1)
Genre: Adult Fiction, Contemporary Romance, Small Town
Pages: 320
Publisher: Berkley
Year Published: 2022
Format: Paperback Copy (Own It)

"They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart.

Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry's Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek- the man she never thought she'd have to live without.

For six summers, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm summer nights working in his family's restaurant and curling up together with books- medical textbooks for him and work-in-progress horror short stories for her- Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Eventually that friendship turned into something breathtakingly more, before it fell spectacularly apart.

When Percy returns to the lake for Sam's mother's funeral, their connection is as undeniable as it had always been. But until Percy can confront the decisions she made and the years she's spent punishing herself for them, they'll never know whether their love might be bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past.

Told over the course of six years and one weekend, Every Summer After is a big, sweeping nostalgic look at love and the people and choices that mark us forever."

My Rating: 4/5

Another famous Canadian author. I hadn't read anything else by this author, but when her book was one of the Goodreads challenges, I thought, what a good time to read another popular Canadian romance author. This story follows Percy as she grows alongside Sam summer after summer, while flashing to our current timeline following tragedy.

Throughout this read, I was impressed by Carley's ability to bring to life Canadian lake life, as well as small town dynamics. I also enjoy a good friends-to-lovers story. The alternating chapters only added to my love of the story. That being said, SAM was aggravating near the end of the book! I found his character was becoming whiny-man-baby. If you've read it you'll understand what portion of the book I'm talking about. The final plot twists were entertaining and interesting, but I wonder where else this author will take her future love stories, and I'm hoping we aren't having a repeated trope moment.

Book Review: Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous by Autumn K. England

Title: Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous
Author: Autumn K. England
Series/Standalone: Everyday Magic Series (Book #1)
Genre: Cozy Fantasy, Adult, LGBT, Romance
Pages: 368
Publisher: Indie Published
Year Published: 2026
Format: Ebook (Own on Kindle)

"STARDEW VALLEY meets STUDIO GHIBLI in a charming cozy fantasy about healing, redemption, and the subtle magic of simple living. Perfect for fans of Can't Speel Treason Without Tea and The Spellshop. Welcome home, weary traveler.

When Oaklin Nettlewood accidentally joined an evil world-ending cult, mind control magic forced them to do unspeakable things. Years later, the realm's heroes have finally saved the day, defeated the villain, and shattered the last remnants of the spell... leaving destruction in their wake. And so, with a spell-damaged memory and whole bushel of trauma. Oaklin escapes to a small farm on the edge of Mossley's Rest and swears an oath: After all the things they were forced to do with their magic, they will never use it again. Ever.

The no-nonsense ghost granny who lives in Oaklin's house has other ideas. As she coaxes Oaklin ont of their shell and back into the world, they find companionship (a grumpy horse and a very good dog), friendship (a local bard and magical baker who should just kiss already), and tentative romance (a paladin-librarian who makes Oaklin's heart come alive for the first time in ages.) Magic even seems possible again- thought strictly for foraging magical mushrooms and protecting the farm from bugs.

Healing comes in gentle waves, and Oaklin doesn't have to do it alone. So what does it mean when an inquisitor comes to town to hunt former cultists just as Oaklin begins to think that maybe, just maybe, they deserve a happy ending after all?"

My Rating: 3/5

I love a cozy fantasy! This one was super fun. I really enjoyed the parallels that were drawn between Oaklin's trauma and the different phrases used to talk about healing. That being said, it was VERY heavy-handed. I also felt that there were moments where the writing seemed to change from cozy fantasy fantasy, to urban fantasy. It felt a little jarring. I look forward to reading more work from the author and seeing where this series takes us.

Book Review: Fangirl Down by Tessa Bailey

Title: Fangirl Down
Author: Tessa Bailey
Series/Standalone: Big Shots Series (Book #1)
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance, Adult Fiction
Pages: 380
Publisher: Avon
Year Published: 2024
Format: Audiobook (Library Copy)

"Wells Whitaker was once golf's hottest rising star, but lately, all he has to show for his 'promising' career is a killer hangover, a collection of broken clubs, and one remaining supporter. No matter how bad he plays, the beautiful, sunny redhead is always on the sidelines. He curses, she cheers. He scowls, she smiles. But when Wells quits in a blaze of glory and his fangirl finally goes home, he knows he made the greatest mistake of his life.

Josephine Doyle believed in the gorgeous, grumpy golfer, even when he didn't believe in himself. Yet after her throws in the towel, she begins to wonder if her faith was misplaced. Then a determined Wells shows up at her door with a wild proposal: be his new caddy, help him turn his game around, and split the prize money. And considering Josephine's professional and personal life is in shambles, she could really use the cash.

As they travel together, spending days on the green and nights in the neighboring hotel rooms, sparks fly. Before long, they're inseparable, Wells starts winning again, and Josephine is surprised to find a sweet, thoughtful guy underneath his gruff, growly exterior. This hot man wants to brush her hair, feed her snacks, and take bubble baths together? Is this real life? But Wells is technically her boss, and an athlete falling for his fangirl would be ridiculous.. right?"

My Rating: 4/5

This book follows Josephine Doyle, who is a diabetic golf expert, which no one would expect. A self-proclaimed fangirl, and sunshine trope personified. Wells Whittaker is a grumpy trope character who fell from an all-time high in their career to rock bottom in the blink of an eye. He's also a jerk. For more than half of the book, I couldn't stand his tone, his narration, etc. The spice was good; it was surprising, but I don't think I like the narrator on these. We'll try the next one in the series and see how it's going.

Book Review: Wild Love by Elsie Silver

Title: Wild Love
Author: Elsie Silver
Series/Standalone: Rose Hill Series (Book #1)
Genre: Romance, Contemporary, Adult Fiction, Billionaire Romance
Pages: 455
Publisher: Bloom Books
Year Published: 2024
Format: Ebook (Kindle Unlimited)

"She's been driving him wild for years.

The good kind of wild. The bad kind of wild.

But mostly, the kind of wild that comes with wanting your best friend's little sister and knowing you can't have her.

Forbes may have labelled Ford Grant the World's Hottest Billionaire, but all he cares about is escaping the press and opening a recording studio in gorgeous small town Rose Hill. Something that comes to a screeching halt when he ends up face-to-face with a young girl who claims he's her biological father. Now, he spends his days balancing business with parenting a sullen twelve-year-old, all while trying desperately to keep his hands the hell off his best friend's sister, Rosie Belmont.

After living in the city, Rosie came blasting back into town like a storm. Beautiful, messy, and chaotic. And one wide-eyed, desperate plea for a job is all it takes for Ford to hire her. He vows to keep her at arm's length. Tries to stick to scowls and grumpy one-liners. But with her, verbal sparring is a type of foreplay-friction that soon turns to blistering heat.

For knows damn well he shouldn't cross this line. But shouldn't and can't are two very different things.

And the only thing he truly can't do is resist."

My Rating: 4.5/5

I haven't read anything by Elsie Silver for a while, but once again I'm being drawn in. I'm gonna need to read all of these immediately. The way that Elsie Silver builds a community/ found family. The tropes she uses in ways that are more than just a trope (the character backgrounds, the use of inner thoughts, etc.). The setting also lends itself so well to the series, and the way that characters from previous series. I can't wait to see West's character come to life.

Thanks for reading,

Book Review: Sins of a King by Emma Slate

Title: Sins of a King
Author: Emma Slate
Series/Standalone: Sins Series (Book #1)
Genre: Dark Romance, Mafia, Adult Fiction
Pages: 418
Publisher: Indie Published
Year Published: 2016
Format: Ebook (Hoopla)

"I can't breathe without him.
Playboy. Billionaire. Criminal.
I should hate him for what he's done to me, but I'm powerless to resist him.
His touch engulfs me.
His demands conquer me.
But Flynn Campbell isn't who I thought he was.
Suddenly, I'm thrust into a world of seduction and sin.
Ensnared by danger and power, foreign desires burn within me.
It's time to embrace the darkness...
And become a queen."

My Rating: 3/5

After reading books from another one of this author's series, I decided to read this one, since there is some character crossover. This one does have a different vibe to it as opposed to the Tarnished Angels Motorcycle Club series. Less diverse in character, personalities and more focused on the mafia element, which makes sense. There was a trope used in a way that I didn't enjoy, and that was why the book lost partial ratings. I look forward to continuing the series and seeing where things go.

My Rating: 2.5/5

I was interested in this book as it was a book that came recommended after The Handmaid's Tale. I can see why people recommend it, it has similar narration styles, the dystopian aspects etc. That being said, this book wasn't what I expected. It spent a lot of time setting up the world, and then the end of the book felt a little rushed to me. That being said, I do plan to try the next book on audio.

"My life is boring. Monotonous.

He's Colt Weston, President of the Tarnished Angels MC.
Colt makes me feel alive... and wanted.
The Tarnished Angels embrace me as one of their own, and when a violent rival threatens to tear us apart, I learn what loyalty truly means.
Family. Sacrifice. Revenge.
There's nothing Colt won't do to protect me."

My Rating: 4/5

As far as motorcycle clubs go, I have only ever really consumed some of Sons of Anarchy as my media understanding of this. But this gave similar vibes to that mixed with dark romance (LORDS series). I liked the characters and the plot; the narration was also super fun, and the spice was good. The writing wasn't my favourite, but the storyline was worth it.

"S.T. Gibson's sensational novel is the darkly seductive tale of Dracula's first bride, Constanta.

My Rating: 5/5

I loved this. I wasn't expecting to absolutely love it! The whole time it's been on my shelf, I was so focused on the fact that it was horror, I wasn't thinking about how well the writing could work. How the story could really grab me, and the parallels it could draw to other abusive relationships. The symbolism was incredible, and the pacing was fantastic. I can't wait to read more by the author.

Book Review: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

Title: Dungeon Crawler Carl
Author: Matt Dinniman
Series/Standalone: Dungeon Crawler Carl Series (Book #1)
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopia, Adult Fiction, Adventure, Humour
Pages: 464
Publisher: Indie Published
Year Published: 2020
Format: Ebook (Kindle Unlimited)

"The apocalypse will be televised!

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible.

In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth- from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds- collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground.

The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot. A dungeon so enormous, it circles the entire globe.

Only a few dare venture inside. But once you're in, you can't get out. And what's worse, each level has a time limit. You have but days to find a staircase to the next level down, or it's game over. In this game, it's not about your strength or your dexterity. It's about your followers, your views. Your clout. It's about building an audience and killing those goblins with style.

You can't just survive here. You gotta survive big.

You gotta fight with vigor, with excitement. You gotta make them stand up and cheer. And if you do have that 'it' factor, you may just find yourself with a following. That's the only way to truly survive the game- with the help of the loot boxes dropped upon you by the generous benefactors watching from across the galaxy."

My Rating: 4/5

My husband and I have decided to do buddy reads once every couple of months. It keeps us reading, inspires conversation and helps limit our blue light before bed. This was his pick for this one, and I had heard a lot of the series from friends. I'm gonna say really quick that this book is geared towards video game players, which makes a lot of sense due to the title, description, etc. I would also say that it has a cruder sense of humour, which I appreciate. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would have liked to cut some of it back, maybe a little, but I did have fun reading it. We plan to read the next one as soon as we get a library hold in.

Thanks for reading,
Sidny

Book Review: Game Changer by Rachel Reid

"New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it's not just a lucky smoothie he's craving- it's the man who made it.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So when a smoothie made by a juice bar barista, Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he's desperate to recreate the magic... and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott's frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott's penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens, it's red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott's terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can't afford to do anything that might derail his career... like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott- but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?"

My Rating: 3.5/5

I have already watched the Heated Rivalry show before reading this, so I knew a lot of the plot points that were going to be covered in the books. I did enjoy the internal dialogue, though, about how Kip felt during the relationship and how Scott felt about coming out of the closet. I liked the steamy scenes, but I found that there were moments where they were a bit repetitive. This could also just be because I am a cis woman.

Thank you for reading,
Sidny

Book Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

Title: The Handmaid's Tale
Author: Margaret Atwood
Series/Standalone: The Handmaid's Tale Series (Book #1)
Genre: Classics, Dystopian, Science Fiction
Pages: 320
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Year Published: 1985
Format: Paperback (Own It)

"The Handmaid's Tale is an instant classic and eerily prescient cultural phenomenon, from the 'patron saint of feminist dystopian fiction' (New York Times) The Handmaid's Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describe life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to and going beyond, the repressive intolerence of teh original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population. The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the prose, by turns cool-eyed tender despairing, passionate, and wry she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment's calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusion. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best."

My Rating: 4/5

This was a bit of a hard read. Not only for the emotional context and how it relates back to our current reality, but also the way it's written is a little confusing. I think though that this lends itself to the fearful and suspenseful telling of tale that feels to close to the world we current live. I'm looking forward to continuing the series, but I'm starting the television show as well.

Sidny

Review: Garlic and The Vampire by Bree Paulsen

Title: Garlic And The Vampire
Author: Bree Paulsen
Series/Standalone: Garlic Series (Book #1)
Genre: Graphic Novels, Middle Grade, Fantasy
Pages: 160
Publisher: Quill Tree Books
Year Published: 2021
Format: Paperback (Library Copy)

"A farm-fresh debut graphic novel starring a heroine who is braver than she realizes.

Garlic feels as though she's always doing something wrong. At least her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it's nice and safe.

But when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.

After all, garlic drives away vampires... right?"

My Rating: 4/5

This was such a fun little middle-grade graphic novel. We follow Garlic as she learns confidence in who she is, how to stand up for those around her, and that is something we all need to remember right now. I don't see myself continuing the series but would recommend to a middle-grade audience.

Book Review: Scarlet Princess by Robin D. Mahle & Elle Madison

Title: Scarlet Princess
Author(s): Robin D. Mahle & Elle Madison
Series/Standalone: The Lochlann Feuds (Book #1)
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
Pages: 324
Publisher: Indie Published
Year Published: 2021
Format: Ebook (Kindle Unlimited)

"A reckless princess. An enemy kingdom. And a mistake that could cost her everything.
Rowan only wanted a bit of adventure. She never meant to start a war.
But when a vodka smuggling trip goes wrong and lands her in the hands of the people she was brought up to hate, the Loclannian princess is forced to put her life on the line for the sake of her cousin and her kingdom. Her only ally is one of her captors, a man who is turning out to be so different from the barbarian she expected him to be.

Now she's in over her head with ancient vendettas, blood debts and the dangerous political games she's never been good at playing. Even Theo's help may not be enough to save her when Socairans still blame her for her parents' war... and when she's tempting fate by falling for one of their own.

Rowan will have to find a way to smooth things over without causing more chaos, before she accidentally kicks off a conflict that could forever alter the fate of two kingdoms."

My Rating: 4.5/5

This first instalment follows Princess Rowan as she enters and remains trapped in a kingdom she knows next to nothing about, other than how they were enemies in the past and have remained barely cordial in the current tense. After a trip to get vodka (something unavailable in her own kingdom), she is caught smuggling and is left to deal with the consequences and a trial that could lead to her death. The authors do an excellent job of writing a fantasy world that is familiar enough to visualize but different enough to keep you on your toes. It almost feels medieval in time frame. The key factor to my enjoyment is Rowan's spunk and personality. Even when backed against a wall, she remains strong. I look forward to seeing how this series continues on, and who knows maybe we'll be reading a lot more from these authors.

"Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is."

My Rating: 3.75/5

I really enjoyed reading something so fun, and some very 2010s. It's nostalgic in such a fun way, but a little cringeworthy. The alien aspect isn't something I've read a ton of, but what a fun addition. It was pretty obvious what was going on based on all the "hints" about aliens. It was fast-paced, fun and just the right amount of spice. I'm looking forward to continuing on with the series via audiobook soon.

"Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lie about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew, seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out... and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don't know who I really am.

They don't know what I'm capable of..."

My Rating: 4.5/5

I love a fast-paced thriller. There is something about a story that has twists and turns throughout the story, and the quick action scenes that make it so fun to me. This author did a great job of landing those turns, making them surprising, but not unbelievable. The book was a quick read, and I look forward to continuing on with the series to see how the author will continue on with some of our characters.

"Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied and gagged. No one outside these dank basement walls knows she's here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn't have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn't realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn- but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can't go against the other girls... unless she wants to be next."

My Rating: 3.5/5

I've had this book on my physical TBR for a while, and I'm glad I got to it. It was an intense read, and for people looking for horror with that 2010s kind of young adult style this was perfect. I was honestly surprised by how intense the body horror was and the horror scenes overall. The characters were interesting, but I don't see myself reaching for the next book in the series at this time.

"All Eden wants is to rewind the clock. To live that day again. She would do everything differently. Not laugh at his jokes or ignore the way he was looking at her that night. And she would definitely lock her bedroom door.

But Eden can't turn back time. So she buries the truth, along with the girl she used to be. She pretended she doesn't need friends, doesn't need love, doesn't need justice. But as her world unravels, one thing becomes the only person who can save Eden... is Eden."

My Rating: 4/5

This was a hard read. The subject matter deals directly with sexual assault and rape, along with the aftermath. This is an important book for anyone and everyone. But I would be hesitant to recommend it, as this isn't a topic that many people open up about. Telling people your history is always your choice, but you do not have to keep other people's crimes secret. Their secrets don't have to live with you; you can tell your truth.

"A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast- again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange- again...

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It's clear from the way he tracks Misery's every movement that he doesn't trust her. If only he knew how right he was...

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and every to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what's hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory... alone with the wolf."

My Rating: 3.5/5

This was very enjoyable. This author does beautifully when writing in a paranormal romance setting, as it remains in a sense of reality, but gives the sense of something more. Something fantastical. It allows the author to show her creativity in a structure that makes sense and doesn't model her other contemporary fiction works so closely. I look forward to continuing on the next book.

"In a world at war with demons, one girl will face the ultimate test when she is forced to enter into an ancient, deadly competition for the chance to save her mother's soul... before she loses her forever. From the New York Times bestselling author of Song of Silver, Flame Like Night comes the beginning of a dark and opulent fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Throne of Glass.

Nine years ago, the war between the Kingdom of Night and the Kingdom of Rivers tore Ã€n’yÄ«ng’s family apart, leaving her mother barely alive and a baby sister to fend for. Now the mortal realm is falling into eternal night, and mó- beautiful, ravenous demons- roam the land, feasting on the flesh of humans and drinking their souls.

Àn’yÄ«ng is no longer a helpless child, though. Armed with her crescent blades and trained in the ancient art of practicioning, she has decided to enter the Immortality Trials, which are open to any mortal who can survive the journey to the immortal realm. Those who complete the Trials are granted a pill of eternal life- the one thing Ã€n’yÄ«ng knows can heal her dying mother. But to attain the prize, she must survive the competition.

Death is common in the Trials. Yet oddly, Ã€n’yÄ«ng finds that someone is helping her stay alive. A rival contestant. Powerful and handsome, Yù’chén is as secretive about his past as he is about his motives for protecting Ã€n’yÄ«ng.

The longer she survives the Trials, the clearer it becomes that all is not right in the immortal realm. To save her mother and herself, Ã€n’yÄ«ng will need to figure out whether she can truly trust the stranger she's falling for or if he's the most dangerous player of all... for herself and for all the realms."

My Rating: DNF

I made it about halfway through this book before admitting to myself that I wasn't loving it. I think that the author's writing style in this wasn't for me. I felt that I was being told a lot of things without a ton of illusion; it was like being told something from a monster manual as opposed to another method. That being said, I'm not sure what would have made it better for me. I'd be curious to try some of her other work and see how I feel, if it's the writing style or just the form of this storytelling for this one, for me. I might pick this one back up in the future, but for now, it's gonna be headed back to the library.
