Book Review: Reckless by Elsie Silver

Title: Reckless
Author: Elsie Silver
Series/Standalone: Chestnut Springs Series (Book #4)
Genre: Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Pages: 466
Publisher: Self Published
Year Published: 2023
Format: Ebook (Kindle Unlimited)
First Line:"'I can't fathom why you feel the need to go work at the dingy little hospital in the country.'"

"Theo Silva. Rowdy bull rider. Notorious ladies' man. Scorching hot trouble wrapped in a drool-worthy package.
And he's looking at me like I might be his next meal.
But I'm almost free of my toxic marriage and sworn off men entirely. So all I see when I look back is temptation served up with a heaping side of heartbreak.

The man is hard to trust-and even harder to resist.
Make that impossible. Because Theo is persistent. And no matter how hard I try to freeze him out, he melts my icy exteriors and pulls apart my defenses.
Over a drink in a small town bar, I blurt out my deepest, darkest secrets. Then I spend the singular hottest night of my life with him.
He worships my body. He makes me blush. I come alive beneath his hands.
Then I tell him to forget it ever happened. I want simple, and with him it all feels complicated.
It was supposed to be a one-time thing.

A secret.
But that little plus sign is going to make this secret impossible to keep."

My Rating: 5/5

This is my absolute favourite in the series so far. I always say that I love a grumpy-sunshine where the grump is the female lead. Because I am also the grump in my relationship. The trope that is in this book is written so well and really just added to the story overall (I mean how could it not). The way everything was written you couldn't help but root for this couple and the way they interact is incredible. Not to mention super sexy. I would highly recommend this series and I can't wait to read the final (?) book next month.

Spoiler: Reckless by Cornelia Funke

I think that this book wasn’t really what I had anticipated it would be. I thought it would be a lot different than it was, and I was sort of disappointed in the way that it turned out. I found myself getting lost in what the characters looked like such as the Goyle or some other creatures that Jacob mentions. I wish that I was able to visualize them better, and maybe I am to blame for not being able to but I also think that the author could have used more interesting and eye popping diction.  I did like that the chapters moved around and it wasn’t always the reader reading about Jacob, it included the Empresses and the Goyle to make for a more interesting reading.

Characters:
Jacob: I’m happy that there was a character who was trying to change someone’s “fate” or “destiny” he didn’t just let his brother get changed into something he wasn’t for the purpose of war he fought to get him back and put his life on the line repeatedly. That’s what I call a really brother. I was sort of unimpressed that he was such a player though. It’s mentioned time and time again how many female … companions, shall we call them, he’s had. Interesting main character though.

Fox: I love how feisty this female character is she doesn’t just do what she’s told, although I found in the end she started to obey Jacob’s orders a little to much for my liking. She is a strong character who helps fight and doesn’t just play damsel in distress and I love that she shape shifts. I think that’s one of the most interesting things in this book, the way we see her in both skin and fur.

Will: We see Will change from human to Goyle and my favorite part of this would have to be the chapter where we see him push Clara away, I think this really solidifies the change that is happening and helps the reader understand that he’s no longer the boy he used to be.

Clara: I think that she’s more of the damsel in distress type and it’s a little bit annoying. I like that she doesn’t give up on Will, but I wonder how long that Larks’ Water will effect her and Jacob and whether or not the mirror will help anything.

Valiant: I love this guy. Although he’s rude and hard to understand he’s funny and makes the book brighter and happier than it could have possibly been without him.

The Dark Fairy: She creeps me out, the way the moths apparently surround her is just messed up.

Empress: I was impressed that she had such a good plan going, but also angry that she wasn’t going to at least try and help Will. Seems a little like black mail.

My Rating: 3/5

I have read one of Cornelia Funke’s best sellers, Inkheart and I really enjoyed it. Some how this book wasn’t as good as I had hoped. I think that the fantasy was a bit to far fetched for me and while there were certain parts that caught me and held my attention for the most part I was lost and confused. I think that not all of the creatures were explained as well as they could have been and I had trouble picturing some of them, for example the Goyle concept although very imaginative I found hard to grasp. I think that this book will lead to a more interesting sequel and although I just thought this book was Ok, I’m sure there are others who fell in love with it, maybe because they love this type of fantasy a little more than I do. I don’t think I’ll be able to find the next book, but if someone reads it, please let me know how it turns out.
