Review: Blood on the Tracks by Shuzo Oshimi

Title: Blood on the Tracks Vol. 2
Author: Shuzo Oshimi
Series/Standalone: Blood on the Tracks (Volume 2)
Genre: Manga, Horror, Adult
Pages: 208
Publisher: Vertical Comics
Year Published: 2017
Format: Paperback (Library Copy)

"His mother has done the unthinkable... and now Seiichi must decide if he will be complicit. but before he can even catch his breath, what remains of his sense of self is smashed to pieces by her next shocking act..."

My Rating: 5/5

The way this volume was so unsettling in my bone was exactly what I want this to be. The art style and the way the characters act appear normal on a surface level but it takes a moment for all that to change. I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about a horror manga that is more just unsettling to start.

Her thoughts turn into an obsession, and when Anya takes a chance to stay up during the day to feel the sun's warmth, her village and the lunar moths are left to deal with the consequences..."

My Rating: 4/5

When I put a hold on this via the library I thought that it was just a picture book and so I thought it would be perfect for the kids I work with who are obsessed with catching bugs. Imagine my surprise when I got this sweet little graphic novel with just the most adorable art style. For who it's aimed for and what it is it is such a sweet little read. I would recommend to someone in the middle-grade age range.

Book Review: These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Megan Spooner

Title: These Broken Stars
Author: Amie Kaufman & Megan Spooner
Series/Standalone: Starbound Series (Book #1)
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Romance
Pages: 389
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Year Published: 2013
Format: Audiobook (Own Hardcover Copy)

"It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a younger war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they're worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other's arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder- would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won't be the same people who landed on it."

My Rating: 4.5/5

This was such a fun read and I think that if you were part of booktube during the Illuminae trilogy releases this was where it all started. This writing is very similar which makes sense as Amie Kaufman wrote with a partner in each series. This was great on audio, the use of the interviews at the start of the chapters really kept my interest intact. The characters were dynamic and the premise was great. Overall, the atmosphere and the premise were 5/5, but Lilac herself knocked this book down by .5 of a rating. I know she's supposed to be the way she is, but I don't have to enjoy that through most of the book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series now that I know they are more companion novels than continuations of the same story.

Book Review: Walk the Edge by Katie McGarry

Title: Walk the Edge
Author: Katie McGarry
Series/Standalone: Thunder Road Trilogy (Book #2)
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Pages: 426
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Year Published: 2016

"One moment of recklessness will change their worlds.

Smart. Responsible. That's seventeen-year-old Breanna's role in her large family, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of the line. Until one night of shockingly un-Breanna-like behavior puts her into a vicious cyber-bully's line of fire- and brings fellow senior Thomas 'Razor' Turner into her life.

Razor lives for the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, and good girls like Breanna just don't belong. But when he learns she's being blackmailed over a compromising picture of the two of them- a picture that turns one unexpected and beautiful moment into ugliness- he knows it's time to step outside the rules.

And so they make a pact: he'll help her track down her blackmailer, and in return she'll help him seek answers to the mystery that's haunted him- one that not even his club brothers have been willing to discuss. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings grow. And suddenly they're both walking the edge of discovering who they really are, what they want, and where they're going from here."

My Rating: 3.5/5

I really do think that these would have been my shit when I was younger, but at my age they're just fun. Although this series does deal with very heavy topics (self-harm, depression, cyberbullying, etc.) it also has some pretty sweet romances within the motorcycle club. I liked the subplot of figuring out what was happening within the club in the past. I love the trope of the good girl falls for the bad boy, but there were more than a few moments that Razor acted in a way that was red flag, after red flag. If someone I was related too was dating a guy who punched drywall, I would not be on board with it. I'll probably keep reading the trilogy for fun, but I'm not in a huge rush to pick up the next one.

Book Review: Stuck With You by Ali Hazelwood

Title: Stuck with You
Author: Ali Hazelwood
Series/Standalone: The STEMinist Novellas (Book #2)
Genre: Romance, Novella, Smut
Pages: 127
Publisher: Berkley
Year Published: 2022
Format: Audiobook

"Nothing like a little rivalry between scientists to take love to the next level.

Mara, Saide and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn...

Logically, Sadie knows that civil engineers are supposed to build bridges. However, as a woman of STEM she also understands that variables can change, and when you are stuck for hours in a tiny New York elevator with the man who broke your heart,  you earn the right to burn that brawny, blond bridge to the ground. Erik can apologize all he wants, but to quote her rebel leader- she'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee.

Not even the most sophisticated of Sadie's superstitious rituals could have predicted such a disastrous reunion. But while she refuses to acknowledge the siren call of Erik's steely forearms or the way his voice softens when he offers her his sweater, Sadie can't help but wonder if there might be more layers to her cold-hearted nemesis than meet the eye. Maybe, possibly, even burned bridges can still be crossed...."

My Rating: 4/5

I have really enjoyed these smutty little novellas. The smut is great, the plot is fun and they are a quick little read for on-the-go. I do have a complaint that our heroine is constantly the same archetype. She is so small, awkward, petite and has the same interests stereotypically (we did see a flux with some interest in soccer here). The male lead is also very similar. Tall, muscular and for the first time this one had a bit of a different look. But overall I can't distinguish any of the heroes or heroines written by the author. I would just like to see a bit more of a diverse range of characters.

Book Review: Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan

Title: Wicked Saints

Series/Standalone: Something Dark and Holy (Book #1)
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Pages: 385
Publisher: Wednesday Books

"Some stories are so beautiful, so brutal, that they claw at your heart and refuse to let go. Welcome to the world of Wicked Saints- an epic, passionate novel that you won't soon forget. Prepare to meet:

A GIRL named Nadya, who hears the whisper of the gods inside her head.

A PRINCE surrounded by desperate suitors and deadly assassins.

A MONSTER hidden behind pale, tortured eyes- and a smile that cuts like a knife.

The paths of these three characters become entwined during a centuria-long war filled with sinners and saints, magic and mystery, and a star-crossed romance that threatens to tip the scales between dark and light... forever."

My Rating: 5/5

I would like to note that my thoughts on this book are not my thoughts on the author. When I read this book I didn't realize how controversial this author is. I don't agree with the actions she has taken this review is fully based on her work that I read.

I really enjoyed this high fantasy-style story and I loved the characters. I think that this author played on a trope that I really enjoyed, two love interests that fill the tropes I enjoy. I also enjoyed the idea of the different magic systems. There were some plot points that I assume would be filled in the next book (I have not decided whether or not I am reading the next in the series). I enjoyed the excerpts from the Book of Saints, and I found that the audiobook was a great way to consume this story. I would recommend picking up the audiobook is your local library has a copy.

Book Review: Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow

Title: Girl in Pieces
Author: Kathleen Glasgow
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Hard-hitting
Pages: 416
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Year Published: 2016
Format: Audiobook (Own Physical Copy)

"Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she's already lost more than most people lose in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.

Every new scar hardens Charlie'sheart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge."

My Rating: 4.5/5

Trigger warnings for self-harm, substance abuse, sexual assault, and additional abuse. This book was a lot, which is to be expected based on the title, cover art and description. I think it's a story that both sees people who have had these experiences but also explains how these situations take place. It was a hard read, but an important one. The characters were dynamic and the atmosphere while chaotic made a lot of sense.

My Rating: 4/5

I enjoyed this one. It had more drama than some of the past ones in the series and every time  I think that I might not like one in this series, I'm pleasantly surprised. Julia Quinn does a great job of writing unique character traits for each of the siblings and their love interests. I liked the idea of friends to lovers mixed with she's engaged to someone else. I look forward to reading more by Julia Quinn in the future and would recommend if you like the show.

Book Review: Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

Title: Fix Her Up
Author: Tessa Bailey
Series/Standalone: Hot & Hammered Series (Book #1)
Genre: Adult Fiction, Contemporary, Smut
Pages: 400
Publisher: Avon
Year Published: 2019
Format: Audiobook

"A brand new romantic comedy from New York Times bestseller Tessa Bailey!

Georgette Castle's family runs the best home renovations business in town, but she picked balloons instead of blueprints and they haven't taken her seriously since. Frankly, she's over it. Georgie loves planning children's birthday parties and making people laugh, just not at her own expense. She's determined to fix herself up into a Woman of the World... whatever that means.

Phase one: new framework for her business (a website from this decade, perhaps?)

Phase two: a gut-reno on her wardrobe (FYI, leggings are pants.)

Phase three: updates to her exterior (do people still wax?)

Phase four: put herself on the market (and stop crushing on Travis Ford!)

Living her best life means facing the truth: Georgie hasn't been on a date since, well ever. Nobody's asking the town clown out for a night of hot sex, that's for sure. Maybe if people think she's having a steamy love affair, they'll acknowledge she's not just the 'little sister' who paints faces for a living. And who better to help demolish that image than the resident sports star and tabloid favorite?

Travis Ford was major league baseball's hottest rookie when an injury ended his career. Now he's flipping houses to keep busy and trying to forget his glory days. But he can't even cross the street without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his.... bat. And then there's Georgie, his best friend's sister, who is not a kid anymore. When she proposes a wild scheme- that they pretend to date, to shock her family and help him land a new job- he agrees. What's the harm? It's not like it's real. But the girl Travis used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman and there's nothing fake about how much he wants her...."

My Rating: 4/5

I really enjoyed this story. I think the whole small town and best friend's younger sister trope was perfect. I have loved the two things that I have read from Tessa Bailey so far and I'm on a roll. I love how unique her characters are and the tropes that she is writing with. So far so good. The smut in this was pretty good as well. If you're looking for a hot summer read, and haven't read this (I don't know if you exist because I'm late to the party) pick it up.

"CAN YOU GO HOME AGAIN?

Thanks to Eren, humanity has taken the town of Trost back from the Titans. Exhausted, Eren falls into a coma for three days- and wakes in shackles, staring at Erwin Smith, leader of the Survey Corps. Certain that Eren's father's research holds the key to the mystery of the Titan's rise, Smith wants an expedition to retrieve it from the house where Eren grew up. But that's deep in Titan territory and to get there Eren will need to master a power he still doesn't fully understand."

My Rating: 2.5/5

This one once again seemed to slow down the plot and the storyline. I feel like maybe this manga was put out for so long that I'm going to start to feel a drag with it. I'm considering taking a break if the next few volumes do not pick up the pace.

"HUMANITY PUSHES BACK!

The Survey Corps develop a risky gambit- have Eren in Titan form attempt to repair Wall Rose, reclaiming human territory from the monsters for the first time in a century. But Titan-Eren's self-control is far from perfect, and when he goes on a rampage, not even Armin can stop him! With the survival of humanity on his massive shoulders, will Eren be able to return to his sense, or will he lose himself forever?"

My Rating: 4/5

This might have been one of my favourites so far from this series. I really enjoyed hearing more about the backstories but also seeing the action and training the soldiers had to go through I appreciate it. It was excellent, just felt a bit disjointed between the time jumps at first.

"Seiichi's mother loves him very much, and his days pass with placid regularity. School, friends, even the attention of his attractive classmate Fukiishi.
Until one terrible summer day, that all changes....

Shuzo Oshimi (The Flower of Evil) delivers his most unsettling work yet, the tale of a seemingly normal family suddenly swallowed up by the creeping horror of everyday life.

Gorgeous art and an understated script only serve to heighten the tension as we watch Seiichi Osabe's life spiral into nightmare."

My Rating: 3.75/5

This first volume was a good introduction to the story and was unsettling. I am so curious to see how the series goes and I wonder how the characters will respond to what is happening in the cliffhanger. I look forward to continuing the series over the next few weeks.

Book Review: The Wild Truth by Carine McCandless

Title: The Wild Truth
Author: Carine McCandless
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Genre: Nonfiction, Memoir, Adult
Pages: 278
Publisher: HarperOne
Year Published: 2014
Format: Audiobook

"The spellbinding story of Christ McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book, Into The Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-oen languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame.

But the real story of Chris's life and his journey has not yet been told- until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister. Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty one years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self discovery, and now tells her own story while in the blanks of his.

Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption.

In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth."

My Rating: 3/5

I do rate nonfiction based on writing and how it met my expectation of where the story was going. I thought that this book would centre a bit more on Chris's life and loves before he left, but it makes sense that it followed the childhood experience that Carine and Chris shared. I was surprised to see how much detail this book went into about the affairs and abuse that took place between parents. I would recommend if you are interested in Into the Wild or have follow-up questions about how Chris McCandless ended up where he did, or if you are curious about his family life.

Book Review: Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton

Title: Beyond the Wand
Author: Tom Felton
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Genre: Nonfiction, Memoir, Adult
Pages: 288
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Year Published: 2022
Format: Audiobook

"They called for a break, and Gambon magicked up a cigarette from out of his beard. He and I were often to be found outside the stage door, having 'a breath of fresh air', as we referred to it. There would be painters and plasters and chippies and sparks, and among them all would be me and Dumbledore having a crafty cigarette.

From Borrower to wizard, Tom Felton's adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame saw him catapulted into the limelight aged just twelve when he landed the iconic role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.

Speaking with candour and his own trademark humour, Tom shares his experience of growing up on screen and as part of the wizarding world for the very first time. He tells all about his big break, what filming was really like and the lasting friendships he made during ten years as part of the franchise, as well as the highs and lows of fame and the reality of navigating adult life after filming finished.

Prepare to meet a real-life wizard."

My Rating: 4/5

I don't rate nonfiction stories based on what they contain as I don't feel right stating that I didn't enjoy hearing about someone's life experience, or facts of history, etc. I do always rate them based on the writing style and this one was enjoyable. I think listening to the audiobook was the way to go for me as the author reads it himself and it helps you understand parts of his humour. I enjoyed listening to it. Would recommend it if you are interested.

Book Review: The Kingpin's Weakness by Jessa Kane

"Easton Brawn, the notorious gangster and self-proclaimed devil, has requested Scout's presence in his luxury box at the MMA fight- after only one glance- and his reputation gives her no choice but to join him there. Anyone who gets too close to Easton becomes a target for his enemies, so although this girl makes his once-dead heart beat out of control, he can only offer her one night of unparalleled passion. Love has no time limits, however. And before Easton knows it, he'll be in a rush to keep the girl of his dreams safe... and his life forever."

My Rating: 2.75/5

This one was far better than the first one, mainly because it had tropes that I enjoyed more than this one. I enjoyed the mafia/gangster aspect way more than I thought I would. I can't wait to see what else she's written, that being said this is pure filth. Just absolute smut. But that's what I expected. It did "inspire" me to read more mafia romances.

Book Review: It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey

Title: It Happened One Summer
Author: Tessa Bailey
Series/Standalone: Bellinger Sisters Series (Book #1)
Genre: Contemporary, Adult, Romance
Pages: 385
Publisher: Avon
Year Published: 2021
Format: Audiobook

"Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father's dive bar... in Washington.

Piper hasn't even been to Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won't last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can't do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She's determined to show her stepfather- and the hot, grumpy local- that she's more than a pretty face.

Except it's a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there's an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn't want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan- and this town full of memories- may have already daughter her heart."

My Rating: 5/5

I had heard a lot of hype about this book and I thought that there was no possible way it would live up to the hype. And yet, here I am giving this book 5 stars. The character were excellent, the environment was fantastic, and the plot was perfect. I loved the way the author set up the romance and the tropes were exactly what I needed. The smut was also exactly what I needed. I can't wait to read more of her books, and if I keep seeing her pop up on my TikTok she'll be unstoppable.

Book Review: The Fighter's Prize by Jessa Kane

Title: The Fighter's Prize
Author: Jessa Kane
Series/Standalone: MMA Series (Book #1)
Genre: Smut, New Adult, Sports

"Whitney's father is up to his eyeballs in gambling debts and now he's placing her as the wager on a no-holds-barred MMA fight. But she refuses to have zero say in her own destiny. So she decides to motivate the Russian fighter, Maxim "Madman of MMA" Semenov, with a kiss. A kiss that turns into so much more and has the Russian vowing to win the fight and claim her forever."

My Rating: 1.5/5

I thought this might have some substance but this was pure smut. Filthy, fast and slightly questionably written smut. The characters had no personality (other than being Russian and poor), and the scenes that were written when they were not having sex weren't great. Overall, just a fun time.

But an old danger re-emerges and Lucy will have to take the mantle of hero again, right the wrongs of her past and, above all else, find a way back to her children."

My Rating: 5/5

I really loved this start to what I hope is a series at some point, but unfortunately, it doesn't look like they plan on releasing any more. I loved the character arches, the first introduction to the world and the artwork was enthralling and I can only hope for more volumes to be released. Would recommend!
