Book Review: A Touch of Chaos by Scarlett St. Clair

Title: A Touch of Chaos
Author: Scarlett St. Clair
Series/Standalone: Hades x Persephone (Book #4)
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Mythology
Pages: 464
Publisher: Bloom Books
Year Published: 2024
Format: Audiobook

"The World Will Burn

Persephone, Goddess of Spring, never guessed a chance encounter with Hades, God of the Underworld, would change her life forever- but he did.

A fight for humanity and battles between gods, it's a world Persephone never thought she would see. To end the chaos, she must draw upon her darkness and embrace who she's become: Goddess, Wife, Queen of the Underworld.

Once, Persephone made bargains to save those she loves, now she will go to war for them."

My Rating: 3/5

This was not all I thought it would be. I enjoyed the series. I felt that the stakes were higher, but the spice was kind of all over the place. I've felt throughout the series that the build-up to spice isn't quite enough for me. The intimate scenes seem to come almost out of nowhere.  The characters have shown so much growth throughout. I'm curious if anyone whose read this and the Hades companion series, if the Hades one is worth it.

Thanks for reading,

Book Review: A False Start by Elsie Silver

Title: A False Start
Author: Elsie Silver
Series/Standalone: Gold Rush Ranch Series (Book #4)
Genre: Romance, Adult Fiction, Contemporary
Pages: 432
Publisher: Self-Published
Year Published: 2022
Format: Ebook (Kindle Unlimited)

"I kissed my best friend's little sister, and the world stood still.
That night we were two perfect strangers, the town's grumpy recluse and a gorgeous girl in the back of a bar. Until we weren't.
Because Nadia Dalca isn't just some girl. She's the girl I can't have. Fourteen years younger than me and completely off-limits.

My plan is to stay away, but the universe keeps pushing us together. It's like some sort of cosmic joke, to give me a taste of something so electric - so real- something that breathed life back into me.
Because I can look, but I can't touch.
Her sinful curves, her light-hearted laughter, her wild side... I'm addicted to every last bit of her.
And when she turns those sultry eyes on me-- the ones so full of longing and so free of judgement? I've always considered myself a strong man. But when she looks at me I'm weak.
To give in to our connection would be a betrayal. My life is beyond complicated, and she has the world at her fingertips. Her brother is the only family she has left, and sad as it sounds, he's also my only friend.
But I kissed her again anyway.
And now I can't stop."

My Rating: 5/5

This was once again Elsie Silver, just writing perfection. The tension between our main characters is excellent. The spicy scenes were wonderful, and the plot was fantastic. I was so grateful for the way the author chose to end this book. She has this way of making each character so unique that I feel like they are real people. This series isn't quite as good as Chestnut Springs in my opinion, but I can't wait to read the Rose Hill Series.

My Rating: 4/5

This was such an interesting instalment in this series. It started out really strong for me and the action near the end was well-paced as well. As a part of the series, I was surprised at the turns that the author chose to make and even more surprised that some plot lines were not pushed to go longer in the series. I am curious to see what happens next in the series. I do love the characters and that's what really keeps me going in this series. I look forward to tangent reading the next two, wish me luck.

"The fourth book in the enormously popular graphic novel series, the latest collection of Sarah's Scribbles comics explores the evils of procrastination, the trials of the creative process, the cuteness of kittens and the beauty of not caring about your appearance as much as you did when you were younger. When it comes to humorous illustrations of the awkwardness and hilarity of millennial life, Sarah's Scribbles is without peer."

My Rating: 5/5

This has been my favourite so far in this little collection. They are fun, and they help us feel seen in our day-to-day lives. Fun, hilarious and overall enjoyable!

"No one survived the last battle unscathed. Flint is angry at the world, Jaxon is turning into something I don't recognize, and Hudson has put up a wall I'm not sure I'll ever break through.

Now war is coming, and we're not ready. We're going to need an army to have any hope of winning. But first, there are questions about my ancestors that need answers. Answers that might just reveal who the real monster is among us.

And that's saying something in a world filled with bloodthirsty vampires, immortal gargoyles and an ancient battle between two gods.

There's no guarantee that anyone will be left standing when the dust settles, but if we want to save this world, I have no choice. I'll have to embrace every part of me... even the parts I fear the most."

My Rating: 2/5

I was really enjoying this series, but this one seemed to drag so much that I actually had to return it and come back to it to be able to finish it. The whole series has always been pretty over the top, but this one felt as though the author was trying really hard to be serious. That is not what I want from the series and I'm unsure if I will be continuing on.

Book Review: Big Nick Energy by Morgan Elizabeth

First Line: "'I'm going on a date tonight,' Connor says into the phone."

"When Connor Finch insists his one-time Tinder Match, Shae, comes to his dad's house for Thanksgiving with her two daughters, it's because he refuses to let them be alone on her first holiday post-divorce.

But when she arrives at the Christmas tree farm and ranch he grew up on, she meets his father- the crazy tall, built, golden retriever cowboy who tells her girls about the magic of the stupid elf on a shelf.

Of course, when she later corners him and tells him thanks a lot for nothing and that she's way too overwhelmed to have to deal with yet another responsibility, he feels terrible.

So terrible, he finds himself driving two hours every night just to deliver an elf, move him about, and create some Christmas magic for her girls.

But what happens when he decides meeting her the way he did was some kind of Christmas miracle, and he needs to convince Shae to give him a shot?"

My Rating: 4.5/5

This was such a fun and sweet book, in comparison with Tis the Season (which I also really enjoyed). This had so many tropes that I enjoyed, and while I haven't read a slow burn that was this good in a while I loved it. I think the characters were super well written, the dual p.o.v was excellent and it was the perfect mix of hallmark and smutty. I would strongly recommend it for the holiday season.

He worships my body. He makes me blush. I come alive beneath his hands.
Then I tell him to forget it ever happened. I want simple, and with him it all feels complicated.
It was supposed to be a one-time thing.

A secret.
But that little plus sign is going to make this secret impossible to keep."

My Rating: 5/5

This is my absolute favourite in the series so far. I always say that I love a grumpy-sunshine where the grump is the female lead. Because I am also the grump in my relationship. The trope that is in this book is written so well and really just added to the story overall (I mean how could it not). The way everything was written you couldn't help but root for this couple and the way they interact is incredible. Not to mention super sexy. I would highly recommend this series and I can't wait to read the final (?) book next month.

This together, the reality of facing time apart, or even officially committing to one another-- all while shining a light on the joy those moments can offer. Catana's unmistakable illustration and writing styles make even the most mundane tasks, like mowing the lawn or deciding whose turn it is to cook dinner, seem charming. Her relatable content is elevated in a fresh and humorous way that only Catana's comics can do."

My Rating: 5/5

These little comic collections give my partner and me so much joy. Catana is able to describe so many relatable little situations you have in a long-term relationship and it helps both my husband and me feel seen. I love them and they always make us giggle together as we take turns flipping through them. I can't wait to read more of them. Would strongly recommend it.

But just when things finally look promising, Elena's past life intrudes and their happily ever after is cast into doubt."

My Rating: 5/5

This series has it all. Just when I think that the tropes aren't going to be it for me Lyssa Kay Adams pulls it off seemingly effortlessly. The characters in every story are just incredible and the concept of the series is something I am so in love with. Lyssa Kay Adams invites us all to look at toxic masculinity and try something "out of the box" to better love our spouses! The idea of a group of men educating themselves about what women want and need through romance novels are just so beautiful to read about. The spicy scenes don't hurt either. I can't wait to read the next one in the series, my only complaint is that it might be the last one and I don't know if I'm ready for that.

But when he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide... is she his biggest threat- or his promise of a happy ending?"

My Rating: 5/5

I love a friends to romance! This is a trope that I just adore. I also think that long-time crushes that pay off in a cute way just make me so happy. It reminds me of my relationship at the beginning with my husband. I think that the author did a great job leading up to this romance. It's one you could see building in the background throughout the past books and their love grew so well over time. I loved, loved, loved this! I can't wait to continue the series.

A hacktivist and a cat cafe owner decode the friend zone in this romantic comedy from the author of Undercover Bromance."

My Rating: 4/5

This is one of my favourite tropes. I love friends to lovers, I love best friend crush vibes where you know both of them are into each other before they make the first moves towards being together. I think that this was an exciting pairing between a cafe owner and an ex-hactivist is so fun to me. Also watching friends pine for each other reminds me of my husband and me. So it's a fun throwback. I recommend this series to anyone wanting favourite tropes with great characters and fantastic tie-ins.

In the sweeping finale, The Diviners will be forced to confront their greatest fears and learn to rely on one another if they hope to save the nation, and world from catastrophe..."

My Rating: 4/5

This book started off being just ok for me. If you're going into this book after the excitement of the third one maybe take a breather and think about how much time the author had between writing each installment. It's important to acknowledge that before leaping in. The first half off the book was slow going I felt like part of the magic (New York City) had been taken away without anything to give. After getting to the towns and meeting together I felt better about where this finale was headed. I loved the fast-paced action and horror aspects of the last section in the book. There are a few things I'd like to change, but I do respect what the author chose to do. Overall, I'm satisfied.

Book Review: The Kill Order by James Dashner

Title: The Kill Order
Author: James Dashner
Series/Standalone: The Maze Runner Series (Book #4)
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction
Pages: 327
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Year Published: 2012
Format: Audiobook

"Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares hit the earth and mankind fell to disease.

Mark and Trina were there when it happened, and they survived. But surviving the sun flares was easy compared to what came next. Now a disease of rage and lunacy races across the eastern United States, and there's something suspicious about its origin. Worse yet, it's mutating, and all the evidence suggests that it will bring humanity to its knees.

Mark and Trina are convinced there's a way to save those left from descending into madness. And they're determined to find it- if they can stay alive. Because in this new, devastated world, every life has a price. And to some, you're worth more dead than alive."

My Rating: 4/5

I love a prequel that describes where the first book takes off. I think that this story did an excellent job of explaining the flares and the illness. Just how everything started out really. This was heart-wrenching and made me angry about how WICKED used people and their innocence to start a pandemic. That being said, maybe not the best thing to read during a global pandemic. I loved Alex's character and would have done anything for that sweet, gruff man. The plot of this book reinvigorated me for the last book in the series.

In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard's stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power... for all will be tested, but not all will survive."

My Rating: 3.5/5

Anyone who has followed any of my bookish information knows that this series is one of my personal favourites and I stand by that. This one wasn't my favourite, and I know a lot of the fans felt similarly about it. This final book was by far the longest, and most drawn out. I felt like the pacing was just off, it wasn't what I expected (and I don't mean that in a good way). There were points that just felt like they lasted forever, but the end just seemed to wrap to quickly, and didn't feel complete.

That being said, I love the characters and the idea of the world. I think that it's a unique dystopian/fantasy mix. I am looking forward to reading the following novella bind up. I can't wait to see what they focus on and who. I hope that we get more of an epilogue through one of these short stories. I also loved the fighting sequences, they are amazing to visualize. The change in perspectives was interesting, but I felt like they chose too many perspectives. I'm curious to see how the novellas add to everything but overall not a strong finale for the series.

Thanks for reading,

Sidny

Spoiler: War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

This series was a favourite for the past few years. At least since the first one came out, I've been keeping up with them. Unfortunately, I didn't get to this one when it first came out and now I'm stuck here thinking that it just didn't end how I wanted it to this. This series has followed Mare Barrow, a girl who unbeknownst to her had immense power and stumbles into a lion's den. Beginning with betrayal, politics, and intense battles. I loved the series overall, but the ending wasn't strong enough for the series.

Characters:
Cal: I really loved his character, but the fact that he chose the crown, time and time again annoyed the shit out of me. I understand that he was trained to rule, and was tutored to believe that the nation would fall without a strong king, but he had been travelling with the new-bloods for some time. He had to understand that they could overthrow him in the same way the original silvers overthrew the reds. And maybe he was set in his ways, but he flipped pretty quick when the only other option was another set of royals trying to take over the nation. It seemed like a last resort move, not a change of heart. I do wonder how he works through these changes in the novella.

Maven: Here I thought he would be dealt with in the end. And in some ways he was. He was left to be killed off until the very end. I was hoping for a more epic battle as we saw throughout the rest of the series and instead it turned more into political warfare. Which is also great, when done well, this wasn't done the best. I was happy to see that Mare was able to fight her demons and end this monster.

Mare: I think that we really saw her grow throughout this revolution. I just wish that we were able to watch her grow a little bit further than the epilogue. I was glad that she was able to find peace and a group of people who she could relate too (other newbloods with similar powers).

Farley: She is my favourite in the series! She is such a badass. Has a baby, has to leave her to go to war. Does it and continually leads groups into battles without powers, just a badass with a shit ton of weapons. I just wish that she had been able to kill Tolly.

Kilorn: I loved his attitude towards being left out and how he fought his hardest to protect Mare from all different kinds of pain. I was also glad that we didn't focus on her turning down his feelings. She was straight forward and let him know that she didn't feel that way, and while he had a moment to deal with that he didn't hold that against her! I loved that!

Iris: Another badass. I hope that in the novella bindup we get to see what happens with her and how she was raised. Because she knew how to blend in and how to make connections. I liked her, definitely interested in learning more about her in general.

Evangeline: I think that she generally took up too much time. I liked seeing her perspective and personal rebellion, but other than the battle in Harbour Bay I didn't think that the pov was all the necessary. I do hope to see more interactions between her and Mare.

Julian: I was glad to see that in general he sided with the Reds and Silvers in the interest of the kingdoms for a while I thought that he was denying their cause and I was pissed. I wish that we had gotten his perspective instead of Mavens to be completely honest.

Moments to Remember:

Pg. 7
"'Did you hear me, lighting girl?' She sniffs and forces a smile, turning back around to reveal a now very red and splotchy face. 'I said I'm proud of you. Write that down. Commit it to memory. You probably won't hear it again.'"

Pg. 58
"'Are you offering yourself for the job, Iris?' he clips, looking down his nose at me.
I tighten at such a foolish thought. 'I am a queen and princess, not a dog playing fetch.'
'Of course, you aren't a dog, my dear.' Maven offers a sneer, never breaking his stride. 'Dogs obey.'"

Pg. 326
"Somewhere, a few of our storms break off. Their job is to call up thunder. Cultivate lightning. Shock and awe the garrison, send them running. Make them think Barrow is here."

Pg. 428
"Farley doesn't rise to the bait this time. She keeps still, and Davidson slowly claps his hands, inclining his head toward the false king. 'I have to applaud you, Maven,' he says. The blank calm of the premier is a welcome respite from so much bile. 'I admit, I didn't expect such deft manipulations from someone so young. But I assume that's how your mother built you, didn't she?' he adds, looking to me."

Final Line: "I will go back."

Sidny

Book Review: Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco

37539001
Title: Capturing the Devil
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Series/Standalone: Stalking Jack the Ripper Series (Book #4)
Genre: Historical Fiction, Young Adult, Mystery
Pages: 453

Publisher: JIMMY Patterson
Year Published: 2019
Format: Audiobook

"In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved elusive killer known as the White City Devil. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer-- or see their fateful romance cut short by an unspeakable tragedy.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's fair they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.

Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thoma begin their investigation, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him-- and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device-- is another.

Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end-- together and in love-- or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?"

My Rating: 4/5

First off if you've read the description and were interested in the criminal aspects of this story, it has already been spoiled for you. The aspect of the murder hotel comes in the last 2 hours of the audiobook correlate that to pages if you wish. I still loved the characters and that's what carried me through this story. I will say that the drama with families was pretty interesting and kept me entertained for the first half of the book. I was also hoping in the last half of the book the mystery would pick up more than it did, but unfortunately, it just didn't. Overall I was happy to see the series through but it was a good time to end it. It was really time to wrap it. Now if anyone has read the novella, I would really appreciate knowing if I should check it out or not.

"Centuries after nuclear war destroyed our planet, humanity struggles to rebuild. It's been a month since the dropships landed and the Colonists joined the Hundred on the ground. The teens, once branded juvenile delinquents, are now leaders among their people.

The Colonists and the Earthborn's are celebrating their first holiday together when, to everyone's horror, they're attacked by a group of strangers whose unusual battle cries fill the air. The newcomers kill scores of people, seize prisoners and pillage the crucial supplies. When hotheaded Bellamy and his analytical girlfriend Clarke discover that Wells, Octavia and Glass have been captured, they vow to get them back at all costs. But as they go after their new enemies, Bellamy and Clark find themselves increasingly at odds, unable to agree on a plan to save their friends.

Meanwhile, Wells, Octavia, and Glass are being slowly brainwashed by their captors, religious fanatics with one goal: to grow their ranks and 'heal' the war-ravaged planet... by eliminating everyone else on it.

But centuries of radiation exposure have taken their toll, forcing the cult to take drastic steps to survive. And unless the rescue party arrives soon, the teen captives will face a fate more terrifying than anything they could imagine. IN this thrilling fourth installment, the hundred fight to protect people they love on the dangerous planet they always dreamed of calling."

My Rating: 2.75/5

I think that this by far the weakest instalment in the series and it makes sense that the series ended here. I think that things were resolved in some ways too quickly and in other ways far too slow. The use of miscommunication in this story was just at some points over the top. I also found myself eye-rolling a bit more than usual. I did enjoy the idea and the change of pace away from our regular setting. I just think that it could have been executed in a different way. I'm glad that I read the story but if you are concerned after reading the 3rd book that might be a good place for you to stop in the series.

Thanks for reading,

Title: The Final Warning
Author: James Patterson
Series/Standalone: Maximum Ride Series (Book #4)
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Pages: 256
Publisher: Jimmy Patterson
Year Published: 2008
Format: Audiobook

"In this breathtaking new story from the astonishing imagination of James Patterson, a girl has to save herself from an army assembled just to capture her-- and maybe save the planet while she's at it.

Maximum Ride is a perfectly normal teenager who just happens to be able to fly, the result of an out-of-control government experiment.

Max and the other members of the FLock-- six kids who share her remarkable ability-- have been asked to aid a group of environmental scientists studying the causes of global warming. The expedition seems like a perfect combination of adventure, activism-- and escaping government forces who watch the Flock like a hawk.

But even in Antartica, trapped in the harshest weather on our planet, Maximum Ride is an irresistible target in constant danger. For whoever controls her powers could also control the world. Maximum Ride is James Patterson's greatest character, a heroine who manages to be human and fearless at once."

My Rating: 1.5/5

This was such a crazy book to listen to. For me, it just came off so preachy. And it was a pretty weird story to hear. They changed the narrator and then the music was still over the top. The more I listen to the audiobooks the more I feel like I'm just too old for this. That being said global warming is a real thing and we do need to take it more seriously. I just can't handle how in your face textbook this book felt overall. Needless to say, going to be taking a break from this series for a while.

Thanks for reading,

This might be my favourite instalment in the whole series so far. It just really jumped the plot and the storyline ahead to make us wonder what is going on in the forest with time and monsters. Also, where did the Lumberjanes come from and when did they start. I'm so excited to see where the characters go and to learn more about their lives and relationships with each other. Also, an introduction to the newer characters makes me so excited.
